What’s On: Athens November 2026.

NOVEMBER HAS OTHER PLANS.

Porcelain bowls make music in Plaka. Art Athina moves into Onassis Ready. Pina Bausch floods the stage at Megaron. Conway the Machine comes to Gagarin, Hunee and Paula Tape take over the booth at Gazarte, and a natural wine fair gives Sunday afternoon somewhere to go.

There’s European cinema, independent design, contemporary performance, jazz, photography and a generation of artists who remember life before everything needed a password.

For our first Athens monthly edit, we’re moving between the institutions and the smaller rooms. Some things need booking. Some need an afternoon. A few might take care of the whole night.

Here’s where we’d start.

ART + DESIGN.

ART ATHINA | 12–16 November

Start with the fair.

Art Athina’s 2026 edition takes place at Onassis Ready, giving November a substantial appointment with contemporary art.

We’d leave enough time to look properly. An art fair can become an exhausting procession of rooms if you approach it like a shopping centre.

Find a work that makes you stop. Ask whose it is. See where that takes you.

12–16 NOV 2026
Onassis Ready
2 Strati Tsirka Street, Agios Ioannis Rentis
Check the organiser for public opening hours and admission.

CÉLESTE BOURSIER-MOUGENOT: CLINAMEN | Until 5 December

A pool of water. Floating porcelain bowls. A composition that changes whenever they meet.

Céleste Boursier-Mougenot’s clinamen turns small collisions into sound at Onassis Mandra, just off Dionysiou Areopagitou.

Give it more time than it takes to photograph. The pleasure is in listening long enough to notice the changes.

While you’re there, browse the accompanying Onassis Stegi × 0fr. Paris shop, with books, special editions and collectible porcelain bowls developed with IONIA.

Go for the installation. Leave room in your bag.

UNTIL 05 DEC 2026
Wednesday–Sunday, 11 am–2:30 pm and 5:30–9:30 pm
Onassis Mandra
2 Dionysiou Areopagitou, Plaka
€5; free for children aged 15 and under

GEN X: TALES FROM THE FORGOTTEN GENERATION | Until 26 November

Before social media made everyone a broadcaster, television, MTV, video, and a different kind of information overload shaped us.

DESTE’s Gen X brings together artists born between 1960 and 1980, drawing on the Dakis Joannou Collection to examine a generation shaped by the shift from analogue to digital life.

The exhibition includes Wolfgang Tillmans, Kara Walker, Elizabeth Peyton, Maurizio Cattelan and plenty more.

Identity, uncertainty, popular culture, and a healthy suspicion of what the world is selling you.

Still plenty to work with.

UNTIL 26 NOV 2026
Tuesday–Thursday, noon–8 pm
DESTE Foundation
11 Filellinon & Emmanouil Pappa Street, Nea Ionia

IRINI KARAYANNOPOULOU: THE GOLDEN SYNDROME | Until 28 November

Gold has never been especially good at knowing when to stop.

Irini Karayannopoulou’s The Golden Syndrome, curated by Efi Falida, brings gemstones, jewellery, and chains into paintings that explore desire, abundance, and the fear of losing what you have.

A useful exhibition for a city where ancient treasure, shop windows and everyday financial reality are never very far apart.

FILM.

THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI REVISITED | 5 November

Crooked streets. Unreliable appearances. A film that still looks like somebody’s particularly elaborate nightmare.

Robert Wiene’s 1920 expressionist classic comes to the Greek National Opera’s Alternative Stage with original music by Nikos Karagiannis, performed live by the Celluloid Ensemble.

The images are more than a century old. The sound is being made in front of you.

That’s a good reason to see it with other people.

Greek National Opera — Alternative Stage
Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Centre
364 Syngrou Avenue, Kallithea

Wim Wenders’ Pina screens alongside the company’s visit, offering another way into the choreographer’s world.

Make a small weekend of it: the film, the performance, and a conversation afterwards about what bodies can say that words keep getting wrong.

MUSIC.

VAPORS OF MORPHINE | 11 November

A baritone saxophone can do a considerable amount of work.

Vapors of Morphine bring Dana Colley’s unmistakable sound to Gazarte, carrying the music into blues, low rock and the darker corners of a Wednesday night.

The set draws on Morphine’s catalogue alongside newer material.

One for people who like their live music with a little weight in the room.

CONWAY THE MACHINE | 12 November

Buffalo rap comes to Liosion Street.

Conway the Machine plays Gagarin 205 in a Plisskën presentation, bringing the measured delivery and heavy production that helped make him a defining voice in contemporary underground hip-hop.

There’s a lot of music this month. We’d put this near the top of the list.

Arab Strap have made an entire world out of things people probably shouldn’t say out loud.

Aidan Moffat and Malcolm Middleton return to Athens with their particular meeting of storytelling, electronics, intimacy and unease.

A strong way to finish the month.

It's better to arrive in comfortable shoes and find out.
